I will be travelling through some of the remotest back country on earth, where cell signals are non existent. I will have a VHF/UHF ham radio with me but of course there is never any guarantee that in an emergency someone will be listening in on any frequency I use to call for help. And, even though the handset can transmit at 8w, there’s no guarantee that anyone else will be in range.
To ensure complete safety in the event of an emergency that requires outside assistance, I will have with me a satellite tracker device which does not rely upon any terrestrial communications infrastructure. It can pinpoint my position to an accuracy of 11 metres and provides other information too such as weather and two way text messaging.
In the event of an emergency it is only necessary to lift the cover on the SOS switch and hold that for 3 seconds. That will alert the international emergency control center who will then immediately check with me to see what’s wrong. If they don’t get an answer they will swing into action and contact the nearest emergency rescue services.
As long as it is switched on and has a clear “radio” view of the sky, this device will track my progress and report back to Garmin on a preset interval. You can see where I am at any time by going to my MapShare page. Note that Google Chrome version above .111 will not correctly display these tracks – use another browser if that happens.
